What is coconut shell mosaic?
Coconut shell mosaic is a surface made from hundreds of small pieces of coconut shell, set one by one on a solid wood base. The shell is a by-product of the coconut industry; instead of being burned or discarded, it becomes a hard, natural and naturally varied finish for tables, night stands, beds and headboards.
Because every fragment is placed by hand, no two pieces are the same — tones range from deep espresso brown to warm caramel, with the subtle sheen of polished shell.
Process
How it is made, step by step
Clean & prepare
Recycled coconut shell is cleaned and prepared into workable pieces.
Cut & polish
Shell is cut into small chips and polished to bring out its natural sheen.
Build the base
A solid wood base — primarily premium teak and selected hardwoods — gives the piece its structure.
Lay by hand
Artisans set every chip by hand, following the form of the table, stand or headboard.
Seal & finish
High-grade protective coatings seal the surface for durability and moisture resistance, in Natural, White or Blue.
